Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio -- Anthony Porter hit a go-ahead three-run home
run in the eighth inning, and Blake Aquadro threw 6.2 strong
innings in his first collegiate start to lead the Youngstown State
baseball team pasts Cincinnati 5-3 on Saturday at Marge Schott
Stadium.
Porter had two of YSU's four hits, three of which went for extra
bases. Aquadro, a freshman lefty from Memphis, Tenn., allowed three
runs on six hits in his 6.2 innings in a no decision.
Trent Wood earned the win, throwing just a third of an inning of
relief of Aquadro in the seventh. Eric Marzec did not allow a hit
and struck out four batters in two innings to earn his second
save.
"This is big win for this program," YSU head coach Rich Pasquale
said after the victory over Cincinnati, which beat 13th-ranked Ohio
State last week. "Our team is a very tight unit that sticks
together."
"Blake, for his first collegiate start, did an outstanding job
of mixing his pitches well and keeping us in it. He showed a ton of
poise. "Offensively we moved the baseball, got some bunts down and
did an overall good job. I'm proud of these guys, and we have to go
out and win the series tomorrow."
Cincinnati took a 2-0 lead on a solo home run by Jimmy Jacquot
in the second and an RBI single in the third. The Penguins finally
got to UC starter Tyler Smith in the fifth when Derek Carr scored
Joe Iacobucci and Zac McFarland on a triple to center. Cincinnati
went back ahead 3-2 on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Wood escaped a first-and-third situation in the seventh, and
Porter drilled Sam Slavik's first pitch over the right-field wall
for the game-winning homer. Jacke Healey walked to start a two-out
rally, and Marzec reached on a hard-hit ball to second that was
bobbled.
Marzec walked one in each inning, but no runners got past first
base.
The Penguins and Bearcats will wrap up their series on Sunday at
1 p.m.
