Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team tied three individual single-game records and nearly tied the team single-game mark for most hits to pick up its first victory in a 12-0 win over South Carolina State in game two of a doubleheader at Lady Bulldog Field. The Penguins (1-5) dropped the opener, 6-4.
Sophomore Haley Thomas and freshman Vicky Rumph each tied the single-game mark with four hits apiece while Thomas tied the single-game triples record with two and Rumph belted two home runs to tie that record.
The Penguins scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, which was all senior starter Cheryl Cale needed. Cale picked up her first victory of the season tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout - the fourth of her career - and struck out three.
Thomas led off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Kristina Rendle, who had two hits. After two out, Rumph put the Guins ahead with her first career home run, a two-run blast.
The Penguins scored four more runs on six straight hits - a single by senior Autumn Grove, back-to-back doubles by sophomores Kristen Philen and Amanda Palmore, a triple by freshman Carolina Kromback and two singles by Thomas and Rendle - to take a 7-0 advantage.
Rumph's second home run of the game put the Guins up, 8-0, in the top of the second and three more unearned runs in the gave YSU an 11-0 lead. The Penguins tacked one more on in the top of the fifth on Grove's sacrifice fly.
In the opener, the Penguins received solid pitching from freshman Kayla Vallery and junior Danielle Chase, who combined to allow just one earned run, but the Penguins were victimized by five errors.
Vallery struck out three and allowed the earned run in two innings of work while Chase struck out six in four innings of relief.
Offensively, Rendle went 2-for-3 with a run batted in while Thomas ripped a triple, scored twice and drove in another.
The Penguins take on Indiana State and Penn, Sunday, March 7, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively, at the Rebel Games.
