hits in a doubleheader split on the opening day of the season at
New Orleans.
Jacke
Healey drove in six runs and hit two home runs - one a grand
slam - in game one as the Penguins won 11-4. The Penguins scored
three runs in the ninth to tie the score in game two, but the
Privateers came back with a run in the bottom half to win 8-7.
Healey finished with three hits and five runs scored on the day
to go along with his six RBIs. Eric Marzec was
6-for-10 with three doubles and a homer, and Jeremy Banks
had four singles as the heart of the Guins' order went a combined
13-for-27 in the doubleheader.
"I was very pleased with our effort in every inning today," head
coach Rich Pasquale said. "We had a good approach at the plate, and
I really felt like we battled every at bat."
In game one, the Penguins got 6.2 solid innings from starter Aaron
Swenson, and Marzec threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the
save. Marzec struck out five of the 11 batters he faced.
New Orleans drew three full-count walks in the first inning and
took a 2-0 lead on Swenson. Those were the only two runs that the
right-hander surrendered until two of his inherited runners scored
in the seventh.
Freshman Zac McFarland
singled in a run in the second to cut the margin to one, and Healey
hit an opposite-field solo blast in the third to tie the score. Joe
Iacobucci led off the fourth with a triple, and the Penguins
went on to score four runs to go ahead 6-2.
Jay Morris hit a two-run double for UNO off of Marzec in the
seventh to make the score 6-4, but the YSU closer came back to
strike out Nolan Church to end the inning.
The Guins then blew the game open with five runs in the top of
the eighth, four of which came on Healey's grand slam to right
center.
In game two, YSU rallied twice before Jerad Comarda's RBI double
with nobody out in the ninth gave the Privateers their first win of
the season.
Marzec gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo
blast, but New Orleans scored twice in the third off Phil Klein to go
ahead 2-1.
After New Orleans went up 3-1 with a run in the fourth, the
Penguins scored three runs with two outs in the fifth to back on
top 4-3. Marzec had a two-run double to plate Banks and Healey, and
Jonathan Crist followed with a single up the middle to bring in
Marzec.
New Orleans tied the score in the bottom of the frame, and the
Privateers scored three times in the seventh to ahead 7-4. The
Penguins stranded two runners in the eighth after back-to-back
strikeouts, but the broke through for three runs on two hits and an
error in the top of the ninth to knot the game at 7-7. Marzec had
another RBI double, and Iacobucci's single to center tied the
game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Munoz
walked Nick Schwaner to start the inning, and Comarda doubled down
the left-field line for the game-winner.
