Youngstown -- The Youngstown
State baseball team will look to carry momentum from a three-game
sweep of Butler when it plays host to Cleveland State for a
three-game set this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader
Saturday at noon and a single game on Easter Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Penguins snapped a seven-game losing skid
to end March with their sweep of the Bulldogs. YSU got strong
starting pitching throughout the weekend as starters Aaron Swenson,
Cody Dearth and Phil Klein combined to allow just three earned runs
in 24 innings. Swenson and Dearth both picked up complete game
victories.
YSU was also strong at the plate, batting .362
in the series. Top hitter John Koehnlein batted a team-high .556,
and Eric Marzec drove in six runs with a .923 slugging
percentage.
The Vikings are 9-17 overall and 2-4 in Horizon
League play, which ranks them one spot below the Penguins in sixth.
The series has big implications for YSU, which can finish the
weekend anywhere from second to seventh in the standings.
