Seniors Strong on Senior Day in Four-Set Loss to West Virginia

Three seniors had strong offensive performances on Senior Day for Youngstown State, but the Penguins struggled in service in a four-set loss to West Virginia on Sunday. Senior Ruth Boscaljon went over 1,300 career kills with 15, and senior teammates Allison Heinz and Kaitlin O'Hara had 10 apiece. Senior Dana Leslie, whose injured knee has forced her to a student coach role this season, also started and served to start the match.
Kristina Gallahan had a match-high 16 kills to lead the Mountaineers, who improved to 16-12 and snapped a three-match losing streak to YSU.
YSU committed nine serving errors and had eight receiving errors in the match.
The first two sets were polar opposites as West Virginia took the first 25-13 and YSU won the second 25-12. Things evened out in the third as WVU won 25-19, and an 11-4 run in the fourth set paced the Mountaineers to a 25-13 win.
The Mountaineers scored 12 of the final 15 points of the first set to turn a 13-10 lead into their 25-13 victory. YSU came out and scored eight of the first nine points in the second set, and the Guins closed out the set on a 13-5 run once West Virginia got within five.
YSU trailed just 13-11 in the third before WVU scored five straight points to go up 18-11. YSU got within four five more times, but could not get closer.
YSU has two more matches remaining in the regular season. The Penguins will play at Cleveland State on Friday at 6 p.m. and at Wright State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
