Cleveland State Defeats Penguins in Three Sets

Cleveland, Ohio -- The Youngstown State volleyball team fell in straight sets to Cleveland State on the Vikings' senior night on Friday, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 at Woodling Gym.
CSU senior Liz Fazio had 11 kills, and freshman Kara Koch matched her with 11 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Beth Greulich added nine kills on a .571 clip. Ruth Boscljon had eight kills and three blocks to lead YSU while Haley Kapferer and Brittany Grove had six kills apiece.
Cleveland State jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set. YSU collected itself and scored six of the next seven points to get within one, and the score stayed within three until the Vikings went up 16-12. YSU climbed within two twice, but Cleveland State held on to win 25-19. Grove had five kills in eight attempts in the first set, and Boscaljon had three in the set.
YSU was the early leader in the second set as a Boscaljon's service ace put the Penguins ahead 9-6. Cleveland State ahead 11-10 as part of an 8-2 run, and YSU got no closer than two once the Vikings went up 14-11. The Vikings hit .353 in the set behind five kills from Fazio and held the Penguins to a .053 clip.
Cleveland State scored five straight points in the third set to go up 9-4, and, once YSU got within 11-8, went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. Kara Koch had five of her 11 kills in the set, and Amy Benz had four of her six. CSU hit .378 in the set while YSU hit .138.
Youngstown State will play its final match of the regular season on Saturday at Wright State. First serve against the Raiders at McLin Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m. With Green Bay defeating Butler on Friday, the Penguins must defeat Wright State and Green Bay must lose to Valparaiso on Saturday for YSU to earn a spot in the Horizon League Tournament.
