Box Score Youngstown -- Canisius shot 51.7 percent and
was 9-for-17 from the 3-point arc in a 74-52 victory over the
Youngstown State women's basketball on Sunday afternoon at Beeghly
Center.
YSU held a 23-19 lead 11 minutes into the game, but Canisius
scored 13 straight points and led by double digits for the final
17:30 of the contest.
Freshman Maryum Jenkins scored 15 points to lead YSU, and Kenya
Middlebrooks scored 10. The Penguins started 8-for-15 from the
field but finished 17-for-48 (35.4 percent).
Ellie Radke scored a game-high 19 points for Canisius in 28
minutes, and Tasia Lee scored 12 points in 20 minutes. They, along
with five other Canisius players, shot better than 50 percent from
the field.
The Golden Griffins improved to 1-2 while the Penguins dropped
to 0-4.
After Canisius scored the first bucket of the second half to go
up 42-28, YSU scored the next five points on a 3-pointer by Bojana
Dimitrov and a Jenkins jumper to make the score 42-33. Micayla
Drysdale two hit 3-pointers in just over a minute, and Canisius
went on to make four more treys in the half.
Jenkins hit a jumper to make the score 54-39 with 12:22
remaining, but by the next time the Penguins found the bottom of
the next they were down 66-39. Tasia Lee's bucket sparked a stretch
in which Canisius made five straight shots, two of which were
3-pointers by Ashley Durham, and took a 27-point lead.
Canisius outscored YSU 22-14 in the paint, which included a 20-6
edge in the first half.
The first half had three ties and five lead changes in the first
16 minutes, leading up to Canisius' 13-point run.
The Golden Griffins led 13-6 on a Radke jumper at the 15:38
mark, but YSU went on a 9-2 run to take a 23-19 lead on a Macey
Nortey jumper with 9:11 remaining. YSU had made seven of its last
10 shots and were 8-for-15 from the floor at that point. YSU, over
the next nearly seven minutes, missed five field goals and two free
throws and committed six turnovers before it scored again on
Middlebrooks' jumper with 2:21 on the clock.
Following Nortey's bucket, Allison Braun hit a jumper on
Canisius' next possession, and two of Radke's 15 first-half points
knotted the score at 23-23 with 7:48 remaining. A Stephanie
MacDonald jumper with 2:38 remaining gave the Golden Griffins a
nine-point advantage before Middlebrooks' jumper ended the drought.
Cansius then scored eight of the final 11 points of the half to
take a 40-28 lead at the break.
YSU's next game will be against the University of Louisiana
Monroe on Friday at 10 p.m. The contest will be played in El Paso,
Texas, as part of the UTEP Thanksgiving Classic.
