Penguins Top Howard in Straight Sets, Will Play for Tourney Title Tonight

Barbosa had a double-double and three other players hit higher than
.420 as Youngstown State defeated Howard in straight sets on
Saturday morning.
The Penguins, who also defeated Norfolk
State in three sets on Friday, will play for the Comfort Suites
49er Tournament title this evening at 7 against host Charlotte.
Barbosa had 12 kills and 10 digs while
sophomore Haley Kapferer had a career-high 13 kills, including
seven in YSU's 25-18 victory in the opening set. The Penguins (3-2)
won the second set 25-22 and the third 25-19 against Howard
(0-6).
Kapferer registered an attack percentage
of .524 while redshirt freshman Tasha Reid's career-high eight
kills helped her to a .667 percentage. Ruth Boscaljon had nine
kills and hit .421 and tallied four block assists. Karla Everhart
had 43 assists on YSU's 48 kills as a team.
The Penguins had to come from behind in
the first set after trailing 11-8 after Janel James' ace. YSU
regained the lead at 13-12 on a Barbosa kill as part of a 6-0 run
on Dana Leslie's serve. The Penguins led 19-14, and scored the
final five points of the set once Howard got within 20-18.
Barbosa had six of her 12 kills in the
second set, and Boscaljon connected on five of her eight attempts
without an error. Although the set was only decided by three, the
Penguins never trailed and allowed Howard to tie only once at 2-2.
Laurie Shives' ace capped a 5-0 run that made the score 7-2, and
Everhart's ace gave the Penguins their largest lead at 16-10.
Howard won five of the next six points to get within two, and it
trailed by the same margin twice more in the set before falling
25-22.
YSU also led 7-2 in the final set before
Howard tied the score at 10-10. The Penguins came out of a time out
and scored five of the next six points to go ahead 15-11, and a
block by Boscaljon and Barbosa put the Penguins in control at
19-12.
Youngstown State hit .400 as a team in
the first set and .448 in the third.
