Barbosa Named MVP as Penguins Win Comfort Suites 49er Tournament

Charlotte, N.C. -- The
Youngstown State volleyball team used a season-high 13 blocks and
another solid overall attack to defeat Charlotte in four sets and
capture the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament title on Saturday
evening.
Tournament MVP Ebony Barbosa had eight
kills and eight digs for the Penguins, who dropped just one set the
entire weekend. Barbosa was joined on the all-tournament team by
sophomore Haley Kapferer and senior setter Karla Everhart.
Barbosa registered a team-high 29 kills
during the three-match tournament and trailed only libero Laurie
Shives in digs with 27.
Kapferer had 28 kills and hit an
impressive .415 to go along with seven blocks for the weekend.
Everhart dished out 108 assists, had 17 digs and also had seven
blocks.
The Penguins' were so well-rounded over
the weekend that the all-tournament team didn't have enough room
for their top two hitters in the championship match. Kaitlin O'Hara
had a season-high 14 kills, and Ruth Boscaljon wrapped up an
impressive tournament with 10 kills and a .429 hitting
percentage.
After trailing only twice in the previous
two matches of the tournament, YSU battled through nine lead
changes and 17 ties against the host 49ers. The Penguins won the
first set 25-17, and they took the third and fourth set 25-22 and
25-20 after falling 25-21 in the second.
Charlotte led 1-0 and 6-5 in the opening
set before YSU scored four straight points and never relinquished
the lead. O'Hara and Barbosa recorded three kills apiece, and YSU
registered five blocks and forced the 49ers into 13 attack
errors.
The 49ers used a 6-0 to take a 12-7 lead
in the second set on the way to a 25-21 win. The 49ers led by as
many as eight in the set at 19-11 before YSU regained some momentum
to make it close.
Charlotte jumped out to a 10-4 lead in
the third set before YSU slowly chipped away and tied the score at
15-15 on O'Hara's kill. Kapferer connected on a kill to give the
Penguins their first lead at 17-16, and the Penguins scored the
final four points of the set off a time out to hang on for a 25-22
win.
YSU led 12-7 in the fourth set before
Charlotte battled back to tie the score at 18-18. O'Hara
answered with a kill to put the Penguins back on top, and Tasha
Reid and Boscaljon recorded the 13th block of the match on the
first championship point.
The Penguins will play in their final
regular-season tournament next weekend at the Robert Morris
Invitational.
