Big Runs Help Penguins Past Norfolk State in Three Sets

Youngstown State used large runs to overwhelm Norfolk State in the
first two sets and hung on in a close third set to win the opening
match of the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament on Friday evening.
Senior outside hitter Ebony Barbosa just
missed a double-double with nine digs and nine kills, five of which
came in YSU's 25-22 victory in the third set. YSU won the first set
25-15 and the second 25-10.
Kaitlin O'Hara added seven kills, and
Ruth Boscaljon registered eight blocks. The Penguins recorded 12
blocks as a team - five solos and 14 assists - to help hold the
Spartans to a 0.03 hitting percentage. YSU meanwhile hit .300 as a
team.
The Penguins trailed by three on three
different occasions early in the first set before a 7-0 run gave
them a 9-5 advantage. They later went on a 10-3 run that extended a
two-point lead into a an insurmountable 22-12 edge. O'Hara had
three kills and three blocks off the bench while Boscaljon had one
kill and three blocks.
YSU went on a similar large run in the
second set to win by 15. Norfolk State was within one at 4-3 before
YSU's 11-2 run made the difference 10 points at 15-5. The Spartans
did not get closer than nine the rest of the way as Haley Kapferer
had six kills and Boscaljon added four blocks. YSU hit .414 in the
set while holding the Spartans to -.074.
The third set was closely contested as
the Spartans and Penguins battled to an 11-11 tie. YSU took a 19-14
lead on an attack error, but Norfolk State scored the next three to
get within two points. The Penguins re-upped the edge to 23-18
before the Spartans made things interesting by getting within
24-22.
YSU will play two matches on Saturday,
the first of which will be against Howard at 10 a.m. The Penguins
will then play host Charlotte at 7 p.m.
