Box Score 2 Toledo, Ohio -- Tom Clayton hit a three-run double and Josh
Page drove in a career-high four runs as Youngstown State defeated
Toledo 10-4 in game two of a Tuesday doubleheader.
Page and Clayton both doubled twice and combined to go 5-for-5
in the seven-inning finale. The Penguins rallied with four runs in
the seventh in game one but came up one run short in a 6-5
setback.
Eric Marzec added three hits and scored three runs for YSU in
game two. YSU had 13 hits and walked five times in game two and
outhit Toledo 8-7 in game one.
Joe Antinone earned his second win of the season, pitching 1.1
scoreless innings in relief of Cody Dearth.
The first three Rockets had hits in the first inning to build a
1-0 lead, but Marzec scored on Page's squeeze bunt in the top of
the second to tie the game.
Josh Wierzba put the Rockets back on top with a homer to start
the second, but the Penguins erupted for three runs on five hits in
the fourth to go up 4-2. Joe Iacobucci singled home Anthony Porter,
Page doubled in Marzec and David Leon singled home Page.
The Rockets put two runners on in the fourth to knock Dearth
from the game, and Tim Krofcheck greeted Antinone with a two-run
single to left center that tied the score at 4-4.
Clayton and Page put the Penguins back on top in the next half
inning as Clayton had a pinch-hit double with two outs and Page
followed with an RBI single to left center.
The Penguins then poured on five runs with two outs in the sixth
to blow the game open. Erich Diedrich and Cory Hornyak hit
back-to-back two-out doubles, and Clayton hit his
bases-loaded double three batters later. Page then doubled home
Clayton to make the score 10-4.
Marzec came on to hold Toledo scoreless in the sixth and
seventh.
"I've been telling the team that winning teams get key runs with
two outs, and we were able to get those today," head coach Rich
Pasquale said. "Cody pitched very well. He just got into a bit of a
jam in the fourth."
In game one the Penguins nearly rallied from five runs down to
tie the score in the top of the seventh. With YSU trailing 6-1,
Sean Lucas started the rally with a two-run single. After Lucas
stole second to put runners at second and third, Diedrich cut the
margin to one with a two-run double to left center. Reliever Chris
Fields came on to get a strike out and ground out to end the
game.
Marzec scored on Anthony Munoz's sacrifice fly in the second to
put YSU on the board first, but Aaron Dudley hit an RBI single and
Dan Sherwood homered to put Toledo up 2-1. Sherwood then hit a
two-run single in the Rockets' four-run sixth.
Adam Kalafos allowed all six runs on seven hits in 5.2 inning in
the loss. Matt Kuna earned the win despite allowing five runs on
eight hits in 6.1 innings.
The Penguins will play host to Akron at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at
Eastwood Field.
