Penguins Tie School Blocks Record in Five-Set Win at Loyola

Chicago -- The Youngstown
State volleyball team tied the school record for blocks in a
five-set match and defeated Loyola for its second straight Horizon
League victory on Friday.
The Penguins posted 20 total blocks
against the Ramblers, which tied the previous top mark for five
sets against Kent State on Nov. 12, 1995. YSU had 24 blocks in a
four-set match against UMKC Sept. 24, 1999.
Haley Kapferer had seven blocks while
Kaitlin O'Hara and Allison Heinz had six apiece. O'Hara added 13
kills, and Ebony Barbosa had 12.
Five different Penguins registered double
digits in digs, with Laurie Shives posting a team-high 15. Barbosa
had 14 while Karla Everhart, Dana Leslie and Amanda Gray each had
11.
Loyola was held to a .113 attack
percentage, but it posted 12 blocks and held YSU to a .185
effort.
None of the five sets were decided by
fewer than seven points. YSU hit .467 in the first set to win 25-14
and .333 in the second to build a 2-0 lead.
Loyola came back to win the next two
sets, 25-15 and 25-17, before YSU took the tiebreaker 15-7.
Barbosa had five of her kills in the
first set when YSU had 17 terminations as a team, and O'Hara had
four of YSU's 16 in the second set.
The Penguins had just 16 kills and four
blocks the next two sets combined as Loyola climbed back into the
match. YSU then posted seven kills and five blocks in the final
set.
YSU will look for its third straight
victory and avenge a loss earlier this season when it plays at UIC
at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
