Green Bay, Wis. -- The Youngstown State women's
basketball team (4-12, 2-4 Horizon League) continues its five-day
road swing through "America's Dairyland" when it visits Horizon
League leader UW-Green Bay, Saturday, Jan. 20, in Green Bay,
Wis.
Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center.
The Penguins are coming off a 60-44 loss to UW-Milwaukee on
Thursday evening at the Klotsche Center.
Sophomore Ashley Pendleton led the Penguins with nine points and
six rebounds while freshman Ta-myra Davis led the squad with seven
boards.
Scouting the Phoenix
UWGB, which has won its last 11 games, is on top of the Horizon
League standings with a 5-0 league mark and owns a 14-3 overall
mark. The Phoenix has three players players averaging in double
figures led by 2006 Player of the Year Nicole Soulis with 18.1
points per game. Senior Natalie Berglin and sophomore Rachel Porath
are also in double figures with 11.1 and 10.1 points per game,
respectively.
The UWGB Series
This will be the 17th meeting between Youngstown State and UW-Green
Bay. The Phoenix have all 15 of the 16 previous meeting between the
two schools. Thte only time YSU defeated UWGB was a 60-56 victory
at the Phoenix Sports Center during the 2004-05 season.
Penguins Hold Foe Under 40
Giving up just 39 points to Detroit on Saturday, the Penguins held
an opponent to under 40 points in a game for the first time since
holding Malone to 25 points on Dec. 29, 1990. Detroit's eight
points in the first half was also a new low for points allowed in a
half.
Hill Completes Circuit
After defeating UIC, Youngstown State Head Coach Tisha Hill has
defeated every school in the Horizon League at least once since
becoming head coach prior to the 2003-04 season.
Karner Chameleon
Youngstown State junior Heather Karner continues to shine during
Horizon league play. Overall, Karner ranks eighth in the league
with 13.1 points per game.
Penguin Block Party
Youngstown State currently leads the Horizon League in blocked
shots per game with 3.60. Sophomore Nikita LaFleur is fourth in the
league with 0.93, sophomore Ashley Pendleton is fifth with 0.79
blocks per game, freshman Anjalia Lyons is 10th with 0.67 and
junior Jessica Schloemp is tied for 14th with 0.47 blocks per
game.
Assist Me Please
Junior Lauren Branson continues her ascent up the YSU all-time
assists chart. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 261
career assists and needs 50 more to move into 10th place on the
career chart. Branson also ranks fourth in the Horizon League with
3.53 assists per game.
Schloemp Streak at 60
With an appearance against UW-Milwaukee on Thursday, junior Jessica
Schloemp extended her games played streak to 60 straight.
Schloemp's consecutive games started streak ended at 34 after she
did not start against Indiana State on Dec. 6.
Take Care of the Rock
Although the Penguins average 20.5 turnovers per game, junior guard
Lauren Branson has been doing her job at the point guard position.
Branson ranks third in the Horizon League with a 1.47
assist-to-turnover ratio.
