Box Score Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored
11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half and junior Heather
Karner scored all 10 of her points after halftime to lead the
Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 55-39 victory on
Saturday evening at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins, who have won two straight game for the first time
this season, improve to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League
while Detroit falls to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Detroit, who trailed 15-8, at halftime, used a 12-4 run to take
a 20-19 lead on a Kandace Jones 3-pointer at the 15:19 mark.
Karner hit two 3-pointers over the next four minutes to lead YSU
on a 12-3 run which gave the Penguins an eight-point edge, 31-23,
with 11:04 remaining.
A lay up by Heather Hatter brought the Titans within six, 31-25,
but Godfrey led the Penguins on a 13-3 run with eight points,
including two 3-pointers, to give YSU an insurmountable 16-point
lead with 6:38 left.
YSU led by as many as 20 points, 53-33, with 2:14 to go.
Youngstown State visits UW-Milwaukee, Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6:30
