Liz Hauger, a YSU female athlete of the year following her senior campaign, earned all conference honors three consecutive years and helped lead the women's basketball program to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.
Hauger, a guard from 1993-94 through 1996-97, finished her career with 1,468 points, which at the time were the sixth most in school history. Currently she ranks eighth.
Hauger averaged 13.5 points throughout her career. She played in 109 contests, making 89 starts. She scored in double figures on 75 occasions.
She made 528 of 1226 field goal attempts (43.1 percent), made 74 3 pointers and was an impressive 328 of 433 (75.8 percent) from the free throw line. She grabbed 532 rebounds (4.9 average), dished out 286 assists, had 202 steals and blocked 24 shots.
During her senior year, she was named the Mid Continent Player of the Year and was a first team all conference selection as YSU went 23-6. The Guins won the regular season Mid-Con title.
She scored a career best 543 points (18.7 average) and grabbed 150 rebounds (5.2 average). She shot 47.1 percent from the field making 197 of 418 attempts, including making 31 3pointers. She was 118 of 146 from the free throw line (80.8 percent).
She scored in double figures in 27 games while scoring over 20 more than 14 times. She posted a career high 31 points against Akron and also scored 30 points at West Virginia.
As a junior, she started all 29 games helping the Penguins go 20-9, win the conference regular season and tournament title and earn the program's first berth in the NCAA Tournament.
A first team all conference selection and all tournament pick, she scored 477 points (16.4 average) and grabbed a career best 152 rebounds (5.2 average). She had 81 assists, 72 steals and seven blocks. She scored double figures 26 times, including eight 20 point games. She made 170 of 404 field goal attempts (42.1 percent) while making 116 of 146 free throws (79.5 percent).
As a sophomore, she started 28 games as the Guins won 17 contests. A second team all league pick, YSU won its first Mid Con Championship. Hauger scored 351 points (12.5 average) while grabbing 164 rebounds (5.9 average). She had 100 assists, 52 steals and 10 blocks. Hauger scored in double figures on 19 occasions, including a season high 24 at Buffalo. She had a career high 11 rebounds at Western Illinois. From the field she shot 42.2 percent making 124 of 294 attempts. She connected on 18 3point attempts and was 85 of 117 (72.6 percent) from the line.
As a freshman, Hauger played in 23 games. She scored 97 points (4.2 average) and grabbed 66 rebounds (2.9 average), finished with 16 assists, 13 steals and three blocks.
Hauger joined the YSU program after a successful high school career at Boardman.
After earning her Accounting degree from YSU, she returned to serve as an assistant coach for the Guins from 1998-2002. She eventually moved on to become assistant coach at Green Bay.
Liz Grzesk, and her husband Gary- also a former YSU assistant coach and current head coach at St. Norbert College, reside in Green Bay with their two children, Garrett and Gracie.
