A great defensive player for the Penguins, Ed Matey was one of the most athletic players ever to put on a Penguin uniform.
Matey played for the Penguins from 1963 until 1966, winning four varsity letters and many other accolades along the way.
He started his second game ever as a true freshÂman, and proceeded to start every game thereafter for four seasons. He was the only freshman that year to receive a varsity letter. That same season, he was named the Most Valuable Player on defense for one game, and also earned those honors in four other games during his fine career.
As a freshman against Southern Connecticut, Matey had an extraordinary performance, recording 15 individual tackles and six sacks.
During his sophomore season, Matey and the deÂfense guided the Penguins to five straight wins to open the season en route to a 6-1-2 overall mark.
As a junior, Matey received the recognition of the Curbstone Coaches after his great play in a game again the University of Maine.
He also earned Most Valuable Player Awards on deÂfense during his junior and senior seasons.
In 1966-67, he was named YSU's Most Valuable Male Athlete.
While at Youngstown State, Matey earned his deÂgree in education, which has trained him well for his current job as a teacher and athletics director at Chaney High School.
