Men's and Women's Cross Country Head Coach Brian Gorby has led both the men's and women's programs to multiple Horizon League Championships since 2013. The men won titles in 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2018 and 2016 while the women claimed crowns in 2025, 2014 and 2013. The programs have ranked consistently in the top three in the league the past decade.
The fall of 2026 will mark his 33rd campaign as the Penguins' Men's and Women's Cross Country Head Coach.
During the 2025 cross country season, Gorby led the men’s and women’s teams to Horizon League championships, marking the first time both programs captured titles in the same season.
The women won their first championship since 2014 and their third overall in the Horizon League, while the men claimed their fourth consecutive title. The Penguins became just the third men’s program in conference history to win four consecutive championships, joining Notre Dame (1988-94) and Butler (2002-11).
Gorby was named the Horizon League Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third time and first since 2014. The two team championships brought his total to 13 championship rings, including titles earned during the program’s time in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Since joining the Horizon League in 2001, the men have had 44 all-league selections, highlighted by 41 selections since the fall of 2013. In 2016, 2022, 2023 and 2024, the Guins had a school-record five all-league honorees. The women have had 41 All-Horizon League selections, including 35 runners since 2009. Since 2013, the men’s program has won six team titles, had four runner-up finishes and two third-place performances. The Penguins had four third-place team efforts from 2001-07. Individually, YSU has had five men’s winners since that time, added four second-place finishers and five other third-place finishers.
Since 2011, the women’s program has had three championships, two second-place finishes and two third-place efforts. Gorby was named the Men’s Coach of the Year in 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2024 and the Women’s Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2025.

Fielding broke her own program 6K record at the 2025 Horizon League Championships, clocking 20:10.9 and finishing 36 seconds ahead of the runner-up. She earned All-Horizon League first-team honors alongside Caleigh Richards, while Jenna Razavi was named to the second team. Gorby coached 10 women’s runners to personal-best times during the 2025 season.

He went on to record the 200th-fastest time in the field in the men's 10,000-meter race at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, becoming only the second male runner to represent YSU at the NCAA national meet and the first in two decades.
