Sofia Macias

Former Penguin Sofia Macias is in her first season as an assistant coach for the women's tennis program and Coach Mickael Sopel.

In the spring of 2022, she helped guide the program back to the NCAA Championships as the Penguins battled to win Horizon League Tournament title. In the semifinals, YSU ousted rival UIC by a 4-2 margin. In the championship contest, the Penguins and Milwaukee were tied 3-3 before the Guins clinched the match with a win at No. 6 singles. Youngstown State played at fourth-seed Virginia in the NCAA Championships. Cecilia Rosas earned first-team All-Horizon League accolades while Eliska Masarikova and Julia Marko were second-team honorees.

Macias was a key member of the Penguins' Horizon League Championship squads the from 2015-18. As a senior, she won a career-high 23 matches, which was highlighted by 15 dual wins in 2018. She won her final six decisions of her career and battled with 52nd-ranked Josie Kuhlman of Florida in the NCAA Regionals. As a junior, she won 21 matches and combined she won 26 matches her first two campaigns at YSU.

A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, she served as a student assistant for the Penguins during the 2019 campaign. She earned her degree from YSU in the spring of 2019.
