Ed Muransky | Penguin of the Year 2022

Ed MuranskyEd Muransky believes in the Mahoning Valley. He has dedicated his time, energy and business acumen to ensure future generations want to call the Youngstown area home.

Muransky grew up on the south side of Youngstown and learned the value of hard work at a young age. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1978, where he was a standout football player for Coach Don Bucci.

A football and academic All-American at the University of Michigan, he played on the 1981 Rose Bowl Championship team under legendary coach Bo Schembechler. He went on to play with the Oakland/L.A. Raiders in the National Football League, where he was a member of the Super Bowl XVIII Championship team.

Muransky learned many life lessons on and off the field. Perhaps one of the biggest lessons he learned was from Coach Schembechler – you have to challenge yourself each and every day to get better; if you do not, you will lose your edge against the competition. He believes it takes a certain drive to stay on top.

After football, he focused on his business interests, started his career and applied that lesson.

He is Chairman of the Board and Founder of The Muransky Companies, and Chairman, CEO and Founder of Chestnut Land Company. Holdings under these companies include Auntie Anne’s Pretzel franchises, Rise Pies Handcrafted Pizza and The Lake Club. He is also Chairman, CEO and Founder of Southwoods Health whose entities include The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods, Southwoods Imaging, the Southwoods Pain & Spine Center, the Southwoods Sleep Centers, Southwoods Physician Services and Southwoods Express Care.

Muransky believes in the value of a good education and the value it brings to a community. He and his family are dedicated supporters of Youngstown State University. He and his wife Chris established the Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series in 2017, in honor of Chris’ father. He is Chairman of the Board of the YSU Foundation, a founding member of the James P. Tressel Endowed Chair in Leadership, a member of the Penguin Club and his companies are involved in several YSU Athletic Programs.

Muransky often collaborates with the University, speaking to students and working with staff on student and talent retention. He believes in bridging the gap and connecting companies in need of services to YSU graduates, so they can make a home for themselves and stay right here in the Valley.

Muransky believes in giving back to the community. He is active in many local groups, serving on the boards for the Western Reserve Port Authority, the Better Business Bureau and the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife have participated in and chaired fundraising events for the United Way of Youngstown & the Mahoning Valley, the Boys & Girls Club, the Salvation Army, Beatitude House, Millcreek Children’s Center, Youngstown Community School, American Diabetes Association, Difference Makers, American Heart Association, Circle of Friends, American Cancer Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Muransky believes this area is a great place to raise a family. He and Chris have been blessed with three wonderful children (son Eddie (Chelsea) Muransky, daughter Deloran (Josh) Thompson and daughter Donielle Muransky) and four grandchildren (Colette (Coco), Carolina (Kia), Paul and James).
