The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the Joshua J. Zarlenga Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.
This scholarship was recently established by former YSU men’s golf student-athlete Josh Zarlenga. Zarlenga was a standout member of the program from 2002 through 2006 and still assists the program serving as a part-time assistant coach.
In his YSU career, he competed in all rounds of every tournament during his time as a Penguin. That total featured a school-record 113 rounds played in 43 total tournaments. Highlighting his career was a three-round score of 226 which led YSU at the 2005 Horizon League Men’s Golf Championships.
He was the 2004-05 recipient of the YSU Male Athletic Leader of the Year award by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from YSU in 2006 and also earned his MBA from YSU two years later. An avid golfer, he still competes in area and regional golf tournaments.
Zarlenga is a partner at the national CPA firm, Hill, Barth & King LLC, where he also serves as lead auditor and tax specialist. One of the youngest partners to be named Principal at the firm, he is also one of only a handful of partners in HBK history to earn the distinction under the age of 32. He is a member of the state and national associations of CPAs. Zarlenga was a finalist in the Mahoning Valley Chamber’s 35 Under-35 Awards in 2016 and has been a long-standing member of the Boardman Park Board, the Youngstown Country Club and the Boardman Booster Club.
The recipient of the scholarship endowment will be a student-athlete on the men’s golf team who is in good academic standing. The first recipient of the scholarship is Jason McQuown who is from nearby Poland High School.
“It’s a pleasure to help my alma mater in any and every way I’m able,” Zarlenga said. “I’m so grateful for all the opportunities that YSU and its outstanding golfing staff and team has given me as a student, teacher and area business professional. I can honestly say that YSU has helped shaped me into the person I am today.”
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said Zarlenga has worked hard to be a successful CPA and his golf experience at YSU opened many doors for him.
“Josh has been a key contributor to YSU for many years,” McFadden said. “We are fortunate to have a great member of the community like Josh endow a scholarship at his alma mater.”
