The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the WYTV Athletic Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Established by 33 WYTV, this scholarship is awarded annually to recognize, reward and applaud the efforts of a Youngstown State University student-athlete who is interested in pursuing a career in broadcasting. 33 WYTV and WKBN-TV 27 sports, in partnership with YSU athletics, is committed to showcasing and celebrating YSU student athletes that excel in both their chosen sport and the classroom.
The recipient must be a student-athlete majoring in communications with a focus on broadcast communications and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or above.
David Coy, President and General Manager of both WYTV and WKBN-TV, said both channels have always been behind the on-and-off the field success of YSU student-athletes.
“Our stations’ have quite an extensive and enjoyable history of working with Youngstown State athletics,” Coy said. “We have really enjoyed showcasing some of the outstanding student-athletes in many different athletic programs over the years. WYTV is committed to supporting YSU athletics and this scholarship allows WYTV the honor of assisting one of the many deserving student-athletes each and every academic year.”
The 2015-16 recipient of the scholarship endowment is YSU quarterback Ricky Davis. Davis had the best year of his career in 2015 completing eight passes for 142 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 195 yards on 42 carries and scoring four touchdowns, which tied for second most on the squad.
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said WYTV has assisted the University and Athletics in many ways and has worked hard to promote events and successes of the school.
“YSU has a close relationship with WYTV and WKBN TV and we are gracious for their support,” McFadden said. “They have hired many YSU graduates to work at the station. This scholarship endowment will help a student-athlete have a chance to work towards earning their degree in the fast-paced field of communications.”
