William Wallace Watson Scholarship Honors Athletics, Education

The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the William Wallace Watson Scholarship.

The William Wallace Watson Scholarship was awarded to a YSU student-athlete for the first time in 2013-14. The first recipient of the scholarship was wide receiver Christian Bryan.

The families of William and Dolores Watson have known for many years how much Youngstown State University and its football program have meant to both of them. It was through education and athletics that the members of the Watson family have been involved and continued to benefit from these associations. William, who was a teacher at Liberty High School, never missed a Penguins home football game and is in the YSU Hall of Fame for football.

Established in 2013, Dolores and the children have dedicated this scholarship as a memorial to William for providing them the love, strength and support that has made a difference in their lives. The family hopes that a deserving individual will have an opportunity to enjoy Youngstown State University football and, at the same time, obtain an education for their future. Preferably, the scholarship will go to an Education major who is a student-athlete at YSU.

To show pride in the scholarship, Sara Lillquist, daughter of William and Dolores, has affixed a YSU Foundation logo and the words “William Wallace Watson Scholarship” on the front of a red Euro Formula Ford open-wheeled race car. The photos for this release feature Sara’s husband, Marshall, and his car at the Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz.

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the generosity of the Watson family is very much appreciated by the university.

“The Watson family has supported our football program and the educational platforms at Youngstown State for many years,” McFadden said. “They value the importance of education and know that athletics is a great way to showcase the university and helps the community rally around a great cause.”
