The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the continued development of the Ray
Travaglini Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship
Fund.
This newly-created scholarship is endowed for Ray Travaglini,
the 2004 Penguin of the Year who was a key factor in the success of
the Penguin Club's Scholarship Ring Banquet held annually in
February at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman.
Travaglini, who passed away in December 2008, was the CEO of
Travaglini Enterprises, based in Meadville, Pa., which controls a
list of business operations including Holiday Inn hotels in Warren
and West Middlesex, Pa., two industrial parks, a Comfort Inn in
Edinburg, Pa., and two more hotels in Erie, Pa. Travaglini also
owned several Perkins restaurants in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New
York.
Travaglini and his family have always been supporters of the
Mahoning Valley community and Youngstown State University
athletics.
"My husband loved all sports, especially football, for that
reason, I established, in his memory, the "Ray Travaglini
Scholarship", a memorial that will continue for many years," said
his wife Jan Travaglini."
A generous philanthropist, Travaglini supported a multitude of
causes for many decades, including generous support of YSU. He was
recognized by YSU through the bestowal of a Doctorate of Humane
Letters and named Distinguished Citizen of the year in 1993.
The scholarship goes to a member of the Youngstown State
football team who has a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.
Student-athletes who are sophomore's academically or higher are
eligible and preference is given to students pursuing a degree in
Business or Education.
The 2011-12 recipient of the Ray Travaglini Scholarship is Nate
Adams. Adams is a redshirt freshman tight end from Newark,
Ohio.
YSU Director of Athletic Development Joe Cassese is honored that
a scholarship will forever link Mr. Travaglini to Penguins
Athletics.
“It is only fitting to see a Ray Travaglini plaque on the
wall of our scholarship loge complex," Cassese said. "It is truly a
reflection of his lifelong commitment to Penguin student athletes
and Youngstown State University. He is missed."
