The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics and YSU Foundation are proud to announce the creation of
the Melanie and Maggie Sosnowski Memorial Scholarship as part of
the increasing University Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The Melanie and Maggie Sosnowski Memorial Scholarship will be
awarded for the first time for the 2014-15 academic year.
The endowment was created to provide financial support to those
in need in the Mahoning Valley and to honor the lives of Melanie A.
and Maggie A. Sosnowski, two heart-felt individuals who took pride
in the community. This scholarship will be awarded to a female YSU
student-athlete who understands that tomorrow is promised to no one
and each day is a gift. The recipient will use her talents in the
classroom and on the field of play to pay it forward to others.
Preference will be given to athletes from Mahoning County with a
2.7 grade-point average or above.
Monica Hughes said the outpouring of support for her sisters has
been overwhelming, and the chance to provide an athletic
scholarship is of great importance to the family.
“Since starting fundraising events for the Melanie and
Maggie Sosnowski Memorial Scholarship we have received a tremendous
amount of support from family, friends, and this community,”
Hughes said. “It is a privilege for us as a family to honor
not only the lives of my sisters with this scholarship, but also
those who have helped make it possible and continue to support our
mission.”
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the
Sosnowski family’s contribution is very much appreciated.
"The lives of Melanie and Maggie are being honored by this
scholarship, and we are thankful to the entire Sosnowski
family,” said McFadden. “Both ladies lived life to the
fullest, and their family’s generosity, not only to
Youngstown State, but to the community, helps keep their memory
alive. This scholarship will aid a Penguin female student-athlete
that they would both be very proud of while providing the
opportunity to enhance her education.”
