James and Barbara Sevenich Scholarship Endowment To Reward Work Ethic

The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the James and Barbara Sevenich Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The scholarship was established by James and Barbara Sevenich this year in support of a football student-athlete who exemplifies teamwork, dedication and a tremendous work ethic.

James Sevenich earned a football scholarship to YSU and played under legendary coach Dike Beede.  From 1956 through 1959, he was a starting guard for the Penguins. He graduated from YSU in 1960 with a degree in Business Administration. The scholarship recipient must be a student in the Williamson College of Business Administration.

While attending YSU and playing football, James worked at General Extrusions, Inc. He learned the traits of dedication and hard work during his time there. James went on to work in outside sales for Fechheimer Bros. for 35 years where he thrived until his retirement.

The Sevenich’s are 1956 graduates of Leetonia High School, where they first met. They were married in 1958 and are the proud parents of four children, sons Jeff and Chuck, and daughters Mary Kay and Marty. They have six grandchildren and enjoy traveling the country since their retirement. The Sevenich’s now reside in Illinois.

Over the years Jim and Barbara have shared many lessons with their children and grandchildren that have served all of them so well.  In giving back they believe the cornerstone of life is to "make an effort, the world will be a better place."

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the Sevenich family is very well respected and he is thankful for their support of Youngstown State University.

“James and Barbara are two outstanding people and we are excited to have them endow a scholarship,” McFadden said. “They have a terrific family and they all have a work ethic that our student-athletes could follow and be successful.”
