The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the continued development of the
Robert G. Camardo, Sr., Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics
Scholarship Fund.
This two-year-old scholarship was established by family and
friends to honor Robert G. Camardo, Sr., who passed away in July
2009. Mr. Camardo was always avid fan of Youngstown State athletics
and was proud of the fact that his three children earned degrees
from the institution.
An endowment was created to provide a scholarship for a YSU
men’s basketball student-athlete. The 2011-12 recipient of
the scholarship endowment is junior guard Blake Allen. Allen, a
native of Tampa, Fla., is in his second year with the program.
Director of Athletic Development Joe Cassese said Mr. Camardo
was a very well-liked person in the community, and he will never be
forgotten.
"This Scholarship represents the Camardo family's strong
commitment to Youngstown State Athletics." Cassese said. "The
Camardo family can be seen in the stands at every home football and
basketball game, and now their father's memory will continue to
have a positive impact on our student-athletes."
Camardo was born Sept. 17, 1936, in Youngstown and spent 53
years barbering at his Esquire Barber Shop in Liberty. He was a
successful businessman who owned and operated a chain of hair
salons and various commercial properties.
He was a member of St. Michael Parish in Canfield, graduated from
East High School in 1955, and attended Barber College in Akron.
Camardo cherished his time with his family, especially vacationing
with them at his homes in Fort Myers, Fla., and at Saybrook on Lake
Erie. He was very proud of his Italian heritage and enjoyed playing
bocce at St. Anthony’s, the Pacentrano and Arco Clubs, where
he also sponsored teams.
Robert Camardo, Jr., said his dad was a big fan of the players,
coaches and staff members he was able to be part of throughout his
life.
"Although we miss him dearly, our family is delighted that my
father's legacy lives on with this scholarship," Camardo Jr. said.
"He loved attending and following YSU athletics and would be
thrilled that annually a YSU student-athlete is financially
assisted with his name attached. My father saw his three children
all graduate from YSU, and, with this scholarship, he will be
forever linked with helping other students reach that same goal. It
is truly the gift that keeps on giving."
