Northeast Ohio President’s Cup Scholarship Endowment Fosters Competition, Fund Raising

The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the Northeast Ohio President’s Cup Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

This scholarship was established by YSU’s First Lady Ellen Tressel and President James P. Tressel in support of a student-athlete who maximizes their potential in the classroom and on the field of competition. The student-athlete awarded this scholarship will strive for excellence through a commitment to their team, their future and our community.

The Northeast Ohio Presidents’ Cup was created by Ellen and Jim Tressel to collaborate with the University of Akron and Kent State University in the pursuit of excellence. The three university presidents gather annually to discuss their respective university’s ambitions to create a new standard for Ohio’s higher education.

The first recipient of the scholarship is junior women’s golfer Courtney Shutt, a native of Dover, Ohio. Shutt is majoring in YSU’s exercise science program. As a freshman in 2015 she was 13th at the Horizon League Championships and as a sophomore she was 16th. Preference will be given to a member of the YSU women’s golf team or a member of the YSU men’s golf team.  The scholarship will be alternated annually between these two programs.

Ellen Tressel said the fellowship of the Northeast Ohio universities makes the event fun and the goal is to raise money to help students pay for their education.

"The Northeast Ohio Presidents’ Cup Golf Match is a collaboration of Youngstown State University, Kent State University, and The University of Akron,” she said. “It is a fun and competitive event that encourages fellowship and camaraderie between communities and supporters of our local universities while raising monies for scholarship dollars for our students in the pursuit of excellent public higher education."

The funds raised from the event are divided between each university for athletic scholarship assistance.  This one-of-a-kind event builds fellowship between our communities, accompanied by a day of golf.  The Presidents’ Cup is hosted by each university on an annual rotating basis.

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the golf challenge between the schools is a creative concept for a scholarship endowment.

“The mission of Youngstown State, Akron and Kent State is to give students high-quality education,” McFadden said. “This is a great way to help the universities in Northeast Ohio accomplish that belief. We have always been, and will always be, thankful for the generosity of first lady Ellen Tressel and President Jim Tressel.”
