Richard R. Lucarell Memorial Scholarship Honors Long-Time Fan

The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the Richard R. Lucarell Memorial Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

This scholarship was established recently in memory of Richard R. Lucarell, who passed away in September.

“Luke” as he was affectionately known, was an avid supporter of Youngstown State University. He was born on July 22, 1942, in Youngstown, to Anthony “Dugan” and Dorothy Pogacnik Lucarell. A 1960 graduate of Ursuline High School, he played football for the Fighting Irish. “Luke” graduated from YSU’s Williamson College of Business in 1968 with a major in Management.

He served many years as a Deputy Clerk in charge of Federal Bankruptcy Court in Youngstown before retiring in 2004. “Luke” loved supporting both Ursuline High School, the New York Yankees and Youngstown State. An army veteran, his love of country and the city of Youngstown lives on with this scholarship. He impacted all those who knew him and his belief in the student-athlete encouraged many of them to achieve success on and off the field of competition.

“There is no better way to perpetuate my brother's legacy of helping students and student-athletes than through your contributions to his YSU scholarship fund.” Phil and Rose Ellen Lucarell.

The annual scholarship endowment will be awarded to a student-athlete on the YSU football team.

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said Richard Lucarell was always putting others first and wanted the best for YSU and the city of Youngstown,”

“Richard cared strongly for our community and for his alma mater,” McFadden said. “We are very appreciative to have a gift that will support our student-athletes in his honor. Richard took a lot of pride in Youngstown and cared about a great deal of people. The recipient of this endowment will do their best to encompass that spirit as well.”
