The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the continued development of the
Joseph L. Nudo Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship
Fund.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a Youngstown State
defensive lineman. In fact, Nudo served as defensive line coach for
the Penguins from 1974-78 under Bill Narduzzi.
The 2011-12 recipient of the Joseph L. Nudo Scholarship is
junior defensive lineman Nick DeKraker (Marne, Mich.).
Born and raised in Youngstown, Nudo was an all-city tackle in
1950 and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1951.
A 1956 graduate of Youngstown College, he went on to have a
distinctive career as an educator and coach. Nudo taught for 31
years at his high school alma mater, Woodrow Wilson High School,
where he coached for 18 years and was head coach for nine years.
Later in his career, from 1974-78, Joe coached the defensive line
at YSU and for 19 years served as an academic advisor for the
Bitonte College of Health and Human Services.
A family man, Joe and his wife Rose, also a Youngstown College
graduate, raised four children, Louis, David, Tracey and Raymond,
all whom are Youngstown State alumni.
“My wife and I graduated from Youngstown College, my four
children are all graduates of Youngstown State University, I was a
teacher, coach and an academic advisor at YSU so it is with great
pleasure that my family and I are able to give back to the
institution that has met so much to me,” Nudo said.
Director of Athletic Development Joe Cassese said Nudo's pride
in Youngstown, YSU football and his family make this an honor that
is special for the recipient.
“Joe Nudo represents a legacy of dedication to the city of
Youngstown and Youngstown State University," Cassese said. "It is
only fitting that his legacy will perpetuate through the generosity
of the Joseph L. Nudo Scholarship in Athletics at YSU. We are
fortunate to have Joe as a member of the Youngstown State Athletic
Family.”
