The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the continued development of the
Ralph W. & Mary Louise Heberling Memorial Football Scholarship
to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a Youngstown State
football player who is in good academic standing.
The scholarship was established as bequeathed in the Ralph W.
Heberling Estate. Mr. Heberling was a life-long resident of
the Mahoning Valley. He was a 1935 graduate of
Youngstown’s South High School and served in World War
II. He worked as a shear man for 39 years, first at Cold
Metal and later at Jones and Laughlin. Mr. Ralph W. Heberling
died December 4, 2009. His appreciation for
“Penguins” football is demonstrated through this
scholarship.
Director of Athletic Development Joe Cassese said Heberling's
passion for Youngstown State football will live forever with this
scholarship.
"The Heberlings are a true representation of dedication to our
Valley," Cassese said. "South High graduates, a World War II
veteran, nearly 40 years of hard work in the mills and life-long
season-ticket holders for YSU football. Their random act of
kindness will always be reflected by the student-athlete whose life
who is positively impacted through their generosity."
