The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the Golden Bear
Scholarship, which will help to uphold the long-standing tradition
of the original East High School Golden Bears athletic program.
The Golden Bear Scholarship will be awarded to a YSU
student-athlete for the first time in 2014-15. The recipient will
be a minority student-athlete who displays dedication, commitment
and pride in competition. The student-athlete must be committed to
the community and give back through community service.
The scholarship has been created to help perpetuate the memory
of the Golden Bears Athletic Association and was spearheaded by
former YSU Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe
Malmisur. Malmisur, a graduate of the original East High School,
was also a member of the original committee to establish the Golden
Bear Hall of Fame.
"The Golden Bear Scholarship was founded on the principal of
perpetuating the long-standing tradition of the original East High
Golden Bears," Malmisur said.
Youngstown East High School was nicknamed Golden Bears from 1950
through 1998. The school, which produced many early Youngstown
College, University and YSU student-athletes, was open from 1925
through 1998.
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said East High
School produced many standout athletes, including five members of
the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame. This scholarship will help keep the
legacy alive of the High School’s former Athletic
program.
“Youngstown East High School has had a long relationship
with our great university,” McFadden said. “Many former
Golden Bears continued their educations and received degrees from
Youngstown State. This will help keep that nickname alive and
remain part of YSU’s and the City of Youngstown’s
athletic heritage.”
