The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the Feld Family
Athletic Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship
Endowment Fund.
The Feld Family Athletic Scholarship will be awarded to a YSU
student-athlete for the first time in 2014-15. The recipient will
be a student-athlete who possesses discipline, a strong work ethic
and the ability to become a leader in the community and beyond.
Kathylynn and Philip Feld are both Youngstown State graduates
and have been long-time contributors and supporters of the
university and Athletics Department. The scholarship was created to
show their appreciation for their outstanding educational
experiences. The Feld’s know that YSU coaches and support
staff assist the student-athletes in achieving success in their
respective sport and this scholarship will afford the students the
opportunity to achieve success in their academics.
Kathylynn Feld served as the Athletic Department’s NCAA
Faculty Representative from 1999-2003. She remains involved at YSU
serving as a professor emeritus in the Department of Health
Profession at YSU’s Bitonte College of Health and Human
Services. She was a full-time faculty member at YSU for more than
30 years.
She and Philip, who is better known as Skip, have attended
numerous YSU athletic events. The Feld’s can always be seen
at football and basketball games showing off their Penguin
Pride.
“YSU is an important part of our lives and we want to let
others have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits we have,”
the Feld’s said. “We feel it has to do with "paying
forward" for the rewards (education, friendship, entertainment,
sports, particularly football and basketball, and being part of the
Penguin Family) we have enjoyed.”
The Feld’s have also created the Philip and Kathylynn Feld
Scholarship for a student who has received an associate degree in
Engineering Technology, Nursing, Medical Assisting Technology,
Radiology Technology, Emergency Medical Technology and Dietetics
and is now pursuing a bachelor degree at YSU.
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the
Feld’s support of Penguins athletics, and, the university
shows the impact that Youngstown State can have on a person’s
future.
“Philip and Kathylynn have given countless hours of
service to Youngstown State and to have them endow a scholarship is
something we are grateful for,” McFadden said. “They
truly optimize what a Penguin fan is all about. They care greatly
about our success on the field and in the classroom. They want a
student, or student-athletes’ time at YSU to be the time of
their lives while providing a backdrop for future
success.”
