Scholarship Endowment to Honor Former YSU Football Player Elliott Dunlap

The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is honored to announce the creation of the C. Elliott Dunlap Memorial Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

This scholarship was established by Darla J. Dunlap and will support a student-athlete in honor of Darla’s husband, Elliott Dunlap, a former YSU football player.

Elliott Dunlap was a two-time captain of the Youngstown State University football team playing under Coach Rey Dempsey. Dunlap graduated from Salem High School in 1970, where he was a standout athlete in football, track and wrestling.

He was a member of the football program from 1971-74 and was a three-year starter at offensive tackle for the Penguins. The 1974 team led by Elliott and Nazih Banna went 8-2 tying a school record for wins in a season. The Guins played in the Division II Playoffs for the first time in school history during the season as well.

After graduating from YSU, he ran the family business, Dunlap Disposal Company, which was started by his grandfather. Dunlap’s business degree from YSU helped prepare him to run the family business, which he ran successfully until 1999. His wife, Darla, along with their two children, C. Reuben and Courtney Dunlap are proud to endow this scholarship.

The Dunlap family is giving back to reward a student-athlete who personifies Elliott’s leadership, dedication, unselfish attitude and his love for his hometown, Salem, Ohio.

Preference for the endowment recipient will go to a graduate of Salem High School or a graduate of a high school in Columbiana or Mahoning County. The student-athlete’s preferred major should be business, but that is not a requirement.

"Elliott's warm spirit and big heart helped mentor so many young people,” Darla said. “His love for our community and love for YSU live on.  We are proud to endow this scholarship in his name."

Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said YSU is thankful to have the Dunlap family honor Elliott’s memory with a scholarship endowment.

“Elliott was a talented offensive lineman for Coach Beede and Coach Dempsey,” McFadden said. “His athletic experiences at YSU and at Salem High School helped him throughout his life. He took the leadership qualities he learned and was able to be a strong person in the community while running a successful family-operated business.”
