The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the continued development of the
Dom's Ice House Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics
Scholarship Fund.
This scholarship is endowed by J.M. Pete and his wife Mary
Salpietra, who were born and raised in Youngstown. Although
they now reside in Michigan, strong family and business ties keep
the Salpietra family connected to the Mahoning Valley and
Youngstown State University. Mr. Salpietra has never forgot
his roots and believes it takes everyone working together in our
community to successfully grow our university.
In the name of their Youngstown based business, Dom’s Ice
House located at 403 Lansing Avenue; Pete and his partner Mark
“Dom” Detesco created this scholarship endowment.
The recipient of this scholarship shall be a football
student-athlete who shows commitment, loyalty and dedication to his
community and team. The 2010-11 recipient of the Dom's Ice House
Scholarship was freshman offensive lineman Stephen Page. Page
redshirted during the 2010 campaign.
"I truly believe that it takes everyone in the community - all
the resources, all the talent and all the time from all walks of
life to be able to sustain and grow the university," Mr. Salpietra
said. "It has been collaboration that Mark and I are very happy to
be a part of.”
The idea developed into what should become a long-term
relationship with the university, Detesco said.
"We’ve talked about doing something like this for
years,” Detesco said. "We were thinking about changing the
logos on our bags and Pete the Penguin just made sense."
The company is the official ice of the "Ice Castle" and provides
all of the ice for YSU pregame football tailgate parties. A portion
of the sale of every bag of ice will be directed to the scholarship
fund.
The business, a staple on the East Side, has operated
continuously in the same location since 1929.
