The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of the Dr. Frank J. Tarantine Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The Dr. Frank J. Tarantine Scholarship was established in the summer of 2015 by Mary and Frank Tarantine. Dr. Tarantine spent 39 years at Youngstown State University as a professor in the Mechanical Engineering department. A YSU graduate, he was dedicated to helping his students and served as a positive role model for his fellow faculty members. In 2004, he was bestowed with most prestigious honor given to the YSU faculty, the Heritage Award.
Dr. Tarantine holds the special distinction with YSU athletics as he was the University’s first Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA. The FAR is responsible for a variety of duties, working mainly as a liaison between the school faculty and athletic department.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a YSU student-athlete majoring in engineering with a preference to those students working towards a degree in mechanical engineering. The student-athlete recipient must maintain a GPA of above a 2.5 to earn the endowment.
The first recipient of the scholarship endowment is YSU senior swimmer Hannah Reynolds. Reynolds, a native of Greensburg, Pa., is a junior for the Penguins and competes in the breaststroke.
The Tarantine’s said they are excited to create a scholarship endowment for a YSU student-athlete.
“This scholarship endowment provides an opportunity to give back and to show my appreciation for what YSU has done for my family and me,” Dr. Tarantine said.
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the Tarantine’s have continued to support YSU academics and athletics in their retirement years.
“Dr. Tarantine is one of our most dedicated and revered faculty members in the University’s great history,” McFadden said. “He spent countless hours as a faculty member helping students achieve their goals and go on to be successful throughout the world. Mary and Frank have always supported YSU and we are thankful for their gift to create a scholarship endowment.”
