González Ortega Paces Penguins at Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational

University Park, Pa. – Freshman Inés González Ortega finished tied for 12th individually to pace the Youngstown State women's golf team at the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday from the Penn State Blue Course.
The Penguins finished 14th in the 18-team field with a three-round total of 898. YSU recorded team scores 307 and 300 in the first two rounds, respectively, on Monday. Youngstown State closed the 54-hole event with a 291 in the third and final session on Tuesday.
In just her second collegiate tournament, González Ortega finished in a tie for 12th with a three-round score of 214 (74-71-69). The freshman's one-under-par 71 in Monday's second round featured 11 pars and four birdies as she fired a two-under-par 34 on the back nine. González Ortega's career-low, three-under-par 69 in the final round on Tuesday included 11 pars and five birdies.
Valentina Peña Anaya turned in a three-round total of 223 (77-71-75). The junior's one-under-par 71 in the second round featured nine pars and five birdies. Neeranuch Prajunpanich carded a three-round score of 230 (80-79-71). The senior's season-low round of 71 in the final session included 13 pars and three birdies.
Sofia Perez Escarcena finished the event with a three-round total of 233 (78-79-76) while Matilyn Zines posted a three-round 251 (78-88-85).
In addition to YSU's five-player team lineup competing on the Penn State Blue Course, a separate tournament featuring only individual competitors was held on the adjacent Penn State White Course on Monday and Tuesday.
In the Happy Valley Individual event, Eliza Mercer placed 10th with a two-round score of 146 (73-73) in her second collegiate outing. The freshman's career-low, one-over-par 73 in the first round featured nine pars, a birdie on the par-three No. 16 and a pair of eagles which came at No. 3 and No. 6. Mercer matched her low round of 73 in the second session while carding 12 pars and three birdies.
At the Nittany Lion Invitational, Virginia Tech claimed the tournament title at 20 under par with a three-round team total of 844. Maryland finished five strokes back as the runner-up with an 849 while Harvard and Penn State each recorded an 853 to tie for third place.
Virginia Tech's Valentine Delon earned individual medalist honors at 13 under par with a three-round score of 203 (69-66-68).
Youngstown State will continue the fall portion of its 2026-27 season on Sept. 20-21 with the Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course in Lansing, Mich.
