Penguins Place Seventh at Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational

Lansing, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's golf team placed seventh in the Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational, which concluded on Monday at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
The Penguins finished the two-day tournament with a 36-hole team total of 624. The event, which originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 holes after inclement weather delayed the opening round of play on Sunday. YSU recorded a team score of 306 in the first round on Sunday before closing competition with a 318 in the second and final session on Monday.
Freshman Inés González Ortega finished tied for 24th to pace the Penguins individually for the third straight tournament to begin the 2026-27 season. The native of Santander, Cantabria, Spain, turned in a two-round score of 156 (75-81) in her third collegiate tournament. González Ortega's first-round 75 featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 11.
Valentina Peña Anaya finished tied for 29th with a two-round total of 157 (80-77) while freshman Eliza Mercer tied for 38th with a two-round 158 (77-81). Mercer carded four birdies during the opening round of action on Sunday.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich finished the event with a two-round score of 159 (74-85) while Sofia Perez Escarcena posted a two-round 160 (81-79). Prajunpanich's two-over-par 74 in the first round included 12 pars and a pair of birdies as she fired a one-under-par 35 on the back nine.
Delaware claimed the tournament tile at 23 over par with a two-round team total of 599 while Central Michigan was the runner-up with a 603. Michigan State placed third with a 608, Rutgers and Bowling Green each recorded a 609 to finish tied for fourth and Findlay was sixth with a 610.
Delaware's Rhianna Gooneratne earned medalist honors at even par with a two-round score of 144 (72-72) while Bowling Green's Addison Kartusch was the individual runner-up with a 146 (72-74).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule season on Sept. 26-27 with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.
