Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State's Sophia Gregory and Sarah Baker were recognized for their success both in competition and in the classroom as the Horizon League released the 2025-26 Valeo Women's Basketball All-Academic Team on Thursday.
Gregory is a sophomore forward from Alliance, Ohio, who earned All-Academic honors for the first time in her career. Baker, a redshirt-freshman from Florence, Ky., is also a first-time selection. Both student-athletes were eligible for the all-academic team for the first time in their careers.
A total of five student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Team in balloting by the League's faculty athletics representatives. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50% of the team's overall contests. An Honorable Mention is awarded to student-athletes who received votes on at least 25% of ballots but did not make the All-Academic team. The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League teams in each of its 19 championship sports.
This is the seventh time in the last eight seasons that a Youngstown State student-athlete has been named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team.
Gregory leads the Horizon League in rebounding while also ranking among the top eight in blocks, steals and assists per game. A two-time Horizon League Player of the Week, she is one of five players in the country averaging at least 10 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and a block per game. Academically, Gregory is a finance major who has appeared on the President's List (4.0 GPA) twice and the Dean's List (3.4+ GPA) three times in her three semesters at YSU.
Baker is YSU's second-leading scorer with 11.8 points per game, and she ranks third in the Horizon League with a .532 field-goal percentage. She set YSU's single-season freshman scoring record on Wednesday by surpassing Caroline McComb's previous record of 346 points that had stood since 1994-95. Baker is a psychology major who has been named to the President's List (4.0 GPA) in all three of her semesters.
Gregory was joined on the All-Academic Team by Cleveland State's Colbi Maples, Green Bay's Jenna Guyer, Oakland's Lianna Baxter, and Wright State's Lauren Scott. Baker was the only player who earned Honorable Mention accolades.
