The Youngstown State football team held its final major scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at Stambaugh Stadium.
The offense scored on the opening drive before the defense turned up the heat with three interceptions and a solid amount of TFLs.
On the scrimmage's first drive, the offense moved 75 yards in seven plays as Tahir Mills plunged in from a yard out. On the drive, QB Beau Brungard was 3-of-4, including a 36-yard toss to Colt Sechrest which moved the ball inside the 10-yard line.
The next two drives bogged down thanks to pressure's by Ajayi Ajaga and Michael Wells.
On a third-and-1 from the 45, Brungard's pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage by Dayne Hodge and it caromed perfectly to DJ Harris who caught it off the deflection and raced 27 yards for a pick six.
The defense took that momentum by forcing three-and-outs in four of the next five possessions.
After Malachi "Bubba" Lewis connected on a 47-yard pass to Anthony Fuline, Devin Sherwood's pass in the end zone was picked off by Weston Sturzinger.
Sherwood rebounded on the next drive connecting with Larenz Lacking on a four-yard scoring toss. Sherwood engineered an 11-play, 58-yard march for the offense's first points since the opening drive.
In the second half of the scrimmage, Jussiah Williams-West intercepted a Lewis aerial.
To conclude the scrimmage, Sherwood again found Lacking for a touchdown, for another four-yard score.
Brungard was 7-of-17 for 104 yards, Sherwood was 13-of-24 for 95 yards while Lewis was 3-of-6 for 45 yards. On the ground, Brungard had 35 yards on six carries while TC Caffey had 32 on seven attempts. Da'Shaun Whatley had 26 yards on three carries while Donald Barksdale had seven rushes for 20 yards.
The Penguins resume practice on Monday as they will begin preparations for the season-opener on August 28 against Mercyhurst.
