A Glimpse at the Guins

  • Senior right-hander Nolan Kubilus is scheduled to make his ninth overall appearance and first start of the season for the Penguins on Tuesday. The Wadsworth, Ohio, native has recorded a 4.26 ERA, eight strikeouts and a .182 opponent batting average in 6.1 innings pitched over eight appearances out of the bullpen in 2025.
  • The Penguins have won two straight decisions after taking the final two games of a three-game Horizon League series with Oakland this past weekend at Eastwood Field. Brady Shannon's walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted YSU to a 13-12 victory on Saturday before the Guins earned the series win with a 4-1 triumph in the finale on Sunday. Youngstown State has now won three of its last four Horizon League series heading into the final week of the regular season.
  • Tuesday will mark the 155th all-time meeting between YSU and Akron on the diamond in a series that dates back to 1950. The Penguins earned wins of 4-3 and 10-9 over the Zips during the 2024 season before suffering an 11-2 setback in Skeeles Field in Akron earlier this season on Feb. 26.
  • YSU has set a new team single-season school record with 276 walks through the first 50 games of the 2025 season, surpassing the previous mark of 272 that was set in 2018. The Penguins rank second in the Horizon League and 33rd nationally in base on balls heading into the week. YSU has hit 59 home runs as a team in 2025, which currently ranks third in the Horizon League and as the second most in a season in program history. The Penguins hit a school-record 60 home runs in 2010.
  • Through games played on May 11, senior outfielder and Washington transfer Kyle Fossum leads the Horizon League in hits (75), home runs (20) and total bases (152) while ranking second in batting average (.393), slugging percentage (.796), on-base percentage (.506), OPS (1.302), runs scored (57) and RBIs (54). • Fossum became YSU's single-season home run king with his 18th home run of the 2025 season on the first pitch of the series opener at Purdue Fort Wayne on April 25. Fossum surpassed the previous single-season school record of 17 home runs, which was set by Andrew Kendrick in 2017. Fossum hit his league-leading 20th home run of the season in YSU's 4-1 win over Oakland on Sunday. Fossum surpassed another school record against Wright State on May 2 when he recorded his 138th total base of the season. He broke the previous mark of 137 total bases, which was set by Mark Thomas back in 1999. Fossum is currently third on YSU's single-season list with 54 RBIs, needing six more to break Jacke Healey's mark of 59 in 2010.
