
Men’s Golf Begins Play at Horizon League Championship on Saturday

The Youngstown State men's golf team will begin play in the 2025 Horizon League Championship on Saturday at Mission Resort + Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
The three-day, 54-hole event will take place at Mission's El Campeon course as the teams will play 18 holes on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to determine the conference champion. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament via Scoreboard Live through links posted on YSUsports.com.
Youngstown State finished third at the Horizon League Championship last season with a three-round team total of 880. YSU posted single-round team scores of 295 and 294 over the first two rounds, respectively, before closing the event with a 291 in the final round. The Penguins have now finished in the top three at the league meet twice in the last three seasons after finishing as the runner-up in 2021-22.
The men's tournament field will feature nine other teams including Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IU Indy, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne, Robert Morris and Wright State.
The Penguins, who are seeded eighth, will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday. Tee times for Sunday and Monday will be based on current placement.
Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Nolan Shilling, Ryan Sam, Jacob Sylak, Jake Ryan and Jordan Kish. In addition, Michael Porter will be available as a possible substitute.
YSU's Saturday Tee Times:
- Kish – 1:10 p.m.
- Ryan – 1:20 p.m.
- Sylak – 1:30 p.m.
- Sam – 1:40 p.m.
- Shilling – 1:50 p.m.
Shilling will be making his Horizon League Championship debut on Saturday. The redshirt freshman has competed in 10 tournaments and 25 rounds while averaging 74.2 strokes per round with a low round of 68. The Murrysville, Pa., native has earned four top 25 finishes in 2024-25 after redshirting last season.
Sam will be competing at the league championship for the third straight season. He finished tied for 10th at the event last season with a three-round total of 221 (77-72-72). The junior also finished tied for 29th as a freshman with a three-round total of 229 (75-76-78). Sam has participated in all 11 tournaments and 28 rounds this season with a 74.4 strokes-per-round average and low round of 69. The Canfield, Ohio, native has earned four top 25 performances during his junior campaign.
Sylak will be competing at the Horizon League Championship for the second consecutive year. He finished tied for 14th at the event as a junior last season with a three-round score of 223 (72-76-75). The Mineral Ridge, Ohio, native has participated in nine tournaments and 21 rounds this season while averaging 74.9 strokes per round with a low round of 69. Sylak has earned one top 10 finish and three top 25 performances in 2024-25.
Ryan will be making his first appearance at the league meet as well. The sophomore has participated in 10 tournaments and 25 rounds this season with a 75.0 strokes-per-round with a low round of 68. The Akron, Ohio, native has earned a pair of top 10 finishes and four top 25 performances during his sophomore season.
Kish will also be making his debut at the Horizon League Championship on Saturday. The freshman has participated in all 11 tournaments and 28 rounds while averaging 74.2 strokes per round with a low round of 70. The Massillon, Ohio, native has earned two top 10 finishes and three top 25 performances during his debut collegiate season. Kish was named the Under Armour Horizon League Men's Golfer of the Week on March 13 after placing third at the South Dakota State's Jackrabbit Invitational.
Youngstown State matched its best performance at the Horizon League Championships with a second-place finish in 2022. The Penguins also finished as the runner-up in 2006. YSU also placed third in 2024, 2019, 2014, 2011, 2010 and 2008.
The NCAA Regionals are May 12-14 at six different sites. Host cities for the regionals include Amherst, Va., Auburn, Ala., Bremerton, Wash., Reno, Nev., Tallahassee, Fla., and Urbana, Ill.
