Youngstown — Youngstown State forward Sophia Gregory has been named the Under Armour Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for her performance during the period of Feb. 17-23. The conference office announced its awards on Monday.

Gregory, a native of Alliance, Ohio, has earned the award for the second time in 2024-25 as she adds another accomplishment to her debut season. She was also the league's Freshman of the Week on Jan. 20.

Gregory ranked second among all players in the conference in both scoring and rebounding last week as YSU was the only team to win two road games. She averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while posting a pair of double-doubles in road victories at Detroit Mercy and Oakland. Gregory was also second in the league in field-goal percentage, going 16-for-24 from the field for 66.7%, and she added three blocks to tie for fifth in the league in that category.

Gregory began the week by scoring a game-high 19 points, her most in conference play this season, and grabbing 12 rebounds in the win over Detroit Mercy. Gregory was 9-for-13 from the field, and she added three assists, a steal and a block. Against Oakland, Gregory scored 16 points while tying for game-high honors with 11 rebounds. She was 7-for-11 from the field while adding two blocks, a steal and an assist. The two blocks brought her season total to 30, which is tied for the most by a freshman in program history.

For the season, Gregory leads all conference freshmen in points (9.6), rebounds (7.8), blocks (1.2) and steals (1.5) per game, and she's also tops in field-goal percentage (.515) and double-doubles (five).

Youngstown State has two crucial games this week to conclude the regular season. The Penguins will play at Robert Morris on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and they'll host Cleveland State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
