Frass Becomes First Penguin to Win Swimmer of the Meet to Wrap Up 2025 Horizon League Championships

The 2025 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up Saturday evening at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind., and more history was made by Miriam Frass of the Youngstown State Women's Swimming and Diving team.

Frass was named the Horizon League Championships Women's Swimmer of the Meet, marking the first time in program history that a Penguin has received that award.

Frass took home the 1650 free Horizon League title, becoming the first member of the Penguins women's program to win the event. She won with a time of 16:40.80, which is a new program record. This was the second event title that Frass had won in as many days, as she also captured the 400 IM title on Friday night.

Olivia Sweetman finished in second place behind Frass in the 1650 free, clocking a time of 16:53.07. Hailey Clark's time of 17:10.14 was good enough for a fifth-place finish, Morgan Glass finished in 12th place with a time of 17:24.23, and Valeria Sanchez-Cordero finished 19th with a time of 18:06.69.

Oliwia Kaniak put forth a very strong effort in the 200 breaststroke, leading for a majority of the race and finishing in second place with a time of 2:15.76. Macy Wang finished in 14th place for the Penguins during the event, clocking a time of 2:24.68.

Gavin Webb secured a third-place finish in the men's 1650 free, clocking a time of 15:31.51. Poyraz San Askin finished sixth with a time of 15:42.96, Terin Frodyma finished 10th with a time of 15:51.34, Ethan Woycehoski finished in 17th place with a time of 16:15.79, and Crispy Barton finished in 18th with a time of 16:16.52.

Jacob Gramer had a great showing in the men's 100 free, finishing third with a time of 44.08, which set a new program record. Also in the event for the Penguins was Darren Laing, who finished 13th with a time of 44.95, and Gavin Redden, who placed 15th with a time of 45.16.

Hanna Held had a very good performance in the three-meter diving event, finishing fourth with a score of 273.60. The Penguins had many swimmers in the event, as Natalie Weissman finished eighth (230.25), Emma Schum finished 12th (224.55), Dasha Toth finished 13th (223.95) and Ellen Linscheid finished 15th with a score of 212.50.

James Slessor secured a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.61. Dom Panozzo finished 16th with a time of 2:08.19.

Lorenz Beck was the lone Penguin to compete in the men's 200 fly, as he finished sixth with a time of 1:48.89.

Allison Ramirez Romero led YSU in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:06.59, good enough for an eighth-place finish. Natalia Andres finished in 12th place with a time of 2:08.18.

Jordan Truselch led the Penguin women in the 200 backstroke, finishing 12th with a time of 2:06.18. She was followed to the finish line by Anna Kozinska, who finished in 14th place with a time of 2:07.43.

Dominic Bono and Soma Albert were the top-two finishers in the B Final of the men's 200 bckstroke, as Bono placed ninth overall with a time of 1:47.22, and Albert finished in 10th place, clocking a time of 1:47.44.

Madelyn Mahoney finished 16th in the 100 free with a time of 52.62.

To wrap up the meet, the women's 400-free relay team of Frass, Mahoney, Sweetman, and Kaniak finished fifth with a collective time of 3:27.12. The men's 400-free relay team of Gramer, Redden, Laing, and Beck also finished fourth with  a time of 44.64.

The Penguin women finished fourth overall, which ties their highest finish in program history (finished third each of the last two seasons as well), amassing 483 total points, which set a new program record for total points at the conference championships. The previous record was 474, which was achieved last season.

The Penguin men finished fifth overall, amassing 410 total points.

Oakland's men's and women's programs swept the team titles for the 12th-consecutive season, with the ken scoring 949 points and the women scoring 830 points.
