The Youngstown State women's lacrosse program was well-represented in the first installment of the Mid-American Conference's weekly awards with sophomore Katie Grottenthaler and freshman Tara McHugh both receiving player of the week honors, the MAC announced Wednesday.
Grottenthaler, named Mid-American Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, started off her sophomore season by scoring a career-high four goals, getting four draw controls, causing a career-high two turnovers, and collecting two ground balls vs. Lindenwood.
McHugh, named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had team-highs in ground balls (three) and caused turnovers (three) in her collegiate debut.
This is the first all-conference weekly honor that either player has received in their college career. Grottenthaler was a member of the 2024 All-MAC Freshman Team.
This marks just the second time in program history that the Penguins have boasted two MAC Players of the Week in the same weekly awards period, and the first time since Natalie Calandra-Ryan (offensive) and Savannah Clarke (defensive) did so on May 3, 2022.
McHugh is just the second Penguin ever to be named MAC Defensive Player of the Week.
