Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State women's basketball student-athlete Danielle Cameron has been named the Under Armour Horizon League Freshman of the Week for her efforts in YSU's two wins during the period of Dec. 15-21.
This is the first career weekly honor for Cameron, a redshirt freshman guard from North Olmsted, Ohio.
Cameron had the two highest-scoring games of her career last week as the Penguins earned two big victories. She averaged a team-high 13.7 points while going 8-for-19 from 3-point range and 9-for-10 on free-throw attempts, and she totaled five assists and five steals over the three-game stretch.
In Tuesday's home win over Wright State, Cameron scored a game- and career-high 18 points while adding two assists and three steals. She made three 3-pointers in the game and was 6-for-12 overall from the field.
After scoring eight points in Friday's loss to FIU, Cameron scored 15 points as YSU topped a UMass team that was ranked 63rd in the NET and 12th in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25. She scored 15 points while going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and she was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. She added three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in the win over the Minutewomen.
Cameron is the second Penguin to earn the Horizon League Freshman of the Week award this season. Fellow redshirt freshman Sarah Baker was the honoree after the first week of the season. Additionally, YSU's Casey Santoro and Sophia Gregory have been recognized as Horizon League Players of the Week this season.
