Moon Township, Pa. – Senior Cris Carroll scored a career-high 31 points, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team suffered an 80-77 overtime setback to Robert Morris on Wednesday evening at the UPMC Events Center.
The Penguins fall to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League while the Colonials improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in league action.
Carroll connected on 10-of-12 shooting from the field and made a career-high six 3-pointers. He also became the first Youngstown State player to score at least 30 points in game since DJ Burns had 32 against Green Bay in 2024.
Vlad Salaridze scored a season-high 15 points while Bryson Dawkins added 13 points.
Carroll sparked the Penguins in the first-half scoring 17 points with five 3-pointers while the Penguins shot 58.3 percent from the floor.
The Penguins led 10, 27-17, after a Dawkins free throw, but the Colonials scored the next seven points to get within three, 27-24, with 3:45 left.
Carroll scored YSU's final nine points on three 3s and the Penguins led 36-32 at the intermission.
Baskets by Carroll and Dawkins to open the second half boosted the YSU lead to eight, 40-32, but the Colonials clawed their way back to cut the deficit to one, 46-45, at the 14:48 mark.
Salaridze converted on an old-fashioned three-point play that put the Penguins up 52-47, but the Colonials went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game 56-52 midway through the second half.
Youngstown State answered with its own 9-0 run on a 3-pointer by Dawkins, a three-point play by Carroll, and another 3 by Dawkins to regain a five-point, 61-56, lead with 4:49 remaining.
Salaridze gave the Penguins a 67-64 lead with a jumper with 1:53 left, but RMU's DeSean Goode tied the game with a 3-pointer at the 1:06 mark.
A Carroll's turnaround jumper put the Penguins up two with 35 seconds left before Robert Morris' Albert Vargas forced overtime with a pair of free throws.
The Colonials took a 74-71 lead in the extra frame before a free throw and driving layup by Salaridze knotted the game at 74-74, and another charity toss by Salaridze gave the Penguins a 75-74 lead with 39 seconds to go.
Robert Morris' Ryan Prather hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go and Kaleb Brown split a pair of free throws for a 78-75 advantage with four seconds left.
Youngstown State returns home to host USC Upstate, Saturday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
