Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State's Sophia Gregory has earned the Under Armour Horizon League Freshman of the Week award for the first time in her career. The league office announced Gregory as its winner for the period of Jan. 13-19 on Monday.
Gregory averaged 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists as the Penguins went 1-1 last week. She ranked third in the conference in rebounding for the week, just 0.5 behind the league leaders. Gregory also went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line during the week to tie for the top percentage in the conference.
In the win over Northern Kentucky, Gregory had 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals in 31 minutes. Against RMU, Gregory scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals.
For the season, Gregory is averaging 8.7 points while leading the Penguins with 7.2 rebounds per game and a .527 field-goal percentage. She ranks third in the conference in rebounding, and she is seventh averaging one block per game.
Gregory gives the Penguins four Freshman-of-the-Week nods during the 2024-25 campaign as Sarah Baker earned the award three times in the first five weeks. YSU is the first team to have two different honorees this season.
Youngstown State will play twice this week to wrap up the first loop through conference play. YSU will play at Cleveland State on Thursday, and it will host Oakland at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center on Sunday at 2 p.m.
