Green Bay, Wis. – The Youngstown State men's basketball team overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to beat Green Bay 73-69 at the Resch Center.
The Penguins improve to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 2-18 and 0-9. Four of Youngstown State's seven league wins have come on the road.
Cris Carroll set a scoring career-high with 24 points and added eight rebounds. Nico Galette had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Jason Nelson scored 11 points and dished out a team-leading five assists. Carroll had scored 20 on two previous occasions this year.
YSU trailed 59-48 with 9:36 remaining and were down 10 after David Wilkerson split a pair of free throws.
At 59-49, Ty Harper slammed home the second of three-highlight reel dunks following a Galette steal and the momentum shifted in YSU's favor. Wilkerson converted a layup then Carroll made his third 3-pointer of the contest as the Guins closed within 60-56 by the 7:46 mark.
The Phoenix split a pair of free throws and Carroll cut the deficit to 61-58 on a layup with 6:54 left.
The teams exchanged free throws and with 4:33 left Galette's layup brought the Guins to within 63-62. A bucket by GB's Marcus Hall extend the lead to three, but a with 2:57 Galette converted an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 65.
After forcing a Phoenix miss, Nelson's layup with 2:05 remaining gave YSU its first lead since the first half. The Guins defense forced a GB turnover and Carroll made two free throws to make it a four-point game with 1:18 remaining.
Two Yonatan Levy free throws cut the margin to 69-67 with 52 seconds remaining. Carroll missed a layup and with 27 seconds left, the Phoenix called timeout. However, Wilkerson's steal led to a breakout by Harper who slammed home a windmill dunk with 13 seconds left.
Green Bay made two free throws to creep within two, but Galette calmly made two foul shots with five seconds for the final outcome.
For the game, YSU shot 26-of-61 from the field (42.6 percent) and made six 3-pointers and 15 free throws. Green Bay was 19-of-39 from the field for 48.7 percent. Levy had 18 points to lead four players in double digits for the Phoenix.
The Penguins return to start a four-game homestand against Robert Morris on Wednesday evening. Tipoff at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center is set for 6:30 p.m.
