Youngstown, Ohio — Five Youngstown State volleyball players posted seven or eight kills, and the Penguins earned their second straight sweep with a 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Tuesday at Beeghly Center. The set scores from Zidian Family Arena were 25-12, 25-20, 25-14.
The Penguins, who swept Kent State on Friday night, finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-6 record.
YSU middle blockers Dayan Malave and Julia Sell combined for 15 kills in 21 attempts, and the Penguins hit .282 collectively. Malave finished with eight kills, two block solos and four block assists, and Abbie Householder matched her with eight kills and a team-high 10 digs. Householder and Nyia Setla both had three aces, and Isabel Schaefbauer orchestrated the balanced attack with 35 assists.
Paige Miller had seven kills to lead Mercyhurst, which was held to a negative-.011 attack percentage.
The Penguins trailed only once in the match, and they won the first and third sets comfortably.
Householder had four kills, and Sell had three kills in attempts in the opening set as YSU won 25-12. The Lakers were within two points at 22-20 in the second set after back-to-back kills from Miller, but a kill by Teagan Ng sparked a 3-0 run for the Penguins to close the set. Kiyah Franklin followed Ng's kill with two of her own terminations.
Mercyhurst scored the first two points of the third set to take its first lead of the evening, but Youngstown State scored six straight points behind Householder's serve to go up 6-2. The margin was 14-12 when YSU went on an 11-2 burst to close the match. The Penguins had five of their seven aces in the final set.
Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play on Friday by hosting Green Bay at 6 p.m. The match against the Phoenix will be streamed live on ESPN+.
