Box Score Niagara University, N.Y. — The Youngstown State volleyball team hit .283 and got 16 kills from Abbie Householder in a 3-0 victory at Niagara on Friday evening. The set scores from the Gallagher Center were 25-23, 25-15, 25-18.
Householder had 16 kills in just 32 attempts from the left pin, and she hit .344. Teagan Ng added 10 kills in 27 attempts, and Julia Sell finished with eight kills while hitting a team-high .438 from the middle.
Isabel Schaefbauer distributed 33 assists while adding nine digs, and Nyia Setla registered 14 digs.
The Penguins held the Purple Eagles to a .124 attack percentage, and YSU had a nine-kill advantage in the 3-0 victory. It was Youngstown State's first sweep of the season.
The Penguins trailed by as many as five at 11-6 in the opening set, but they rallied to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Down 16-12, YSU went on a 7-2 run and took a 19-18 lead on a block by Schaefbauer and Kelsey Cooper. Niagara's final lead was 22-21, and YSU scored four of the final five points. Three of those came on a kill each from Kiyah Franklin, Ng and Sell.
In the second set, Youngstown State turned a 6-6 tie into a 14-7 lead with an 8-1 run that was capped on a block by Sell and Franklin. The margin was at least four the rest of the set, and the 25-15 final score was the largest gap.
Similar to the first set, YSU rallied in the third after trailing 6-2 early. The Penguins caught the Purple Eagles at 11, and they took a 13-11 advantage after back-to-back kills by Householder and a Franklin termination. YSU held the lead the rest of the match.
Youngstown State will have one more contest in Buffalo on Saturday as it will try to go 3-0 at the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational. YSU's match against Bucknell will begin at noon, and the contest will be played at Niagara.
